Hmm, that's a very good question. I usually get asked what I love most about nursing. As far as what I like least, I would have to say the patient:nurse ratios. Having too many patients can impact patient safety - for example, I once had 7 patients at a time and each patient had 10-20 different medications each that had to be given within the same time window. As nurses, we do everything we can to ensure we give the right patient the right medication. However, it's still puts me at an increased risk for making an error and it becomes very daunting and discouraging when juggling multiple patients. Thankfully, this doesn't happen to me very often and there is new legislation out with proposed nurse:patient ratio limits.

To start out my response please know that I love my job an as RN. I have been practicing as a staff nurse in a NICU for 42 years. But...there are drawbacks to consider when thinking about nursing as a career. My 3 biggest topics for you to think about are that, in order to provide care to your patients, nurses need to work night shifts, weekends and holidays. These can be some of the most stressful issues facing a staff nurse. So when thinking of your future keep these three realities in mind.

Hi Maria,
I don't like when I'm given an unsafe number of patients for the acuity and still expected to manage that load of patients. Currently, only California has laws in place restricting patient loads that I know of. I prefer to take care of 5 or less patients. I find that is usually easier for me.
