I majored in Economics and minored in Finance when I was in college. I eventually ended up in financial services working at a mutual fund company and then later at a regulator for the financial services industry. My finance background has taken me to a number of different employers but it translates across different areas of focus. Honesty will help you go far in financial services because for too long dishonest people took advantage of other, less knowledgeable investors but things changed after the financial crisis. If you're not familiar with the crisis Google it.

I have a very successful career in the financial industry without a college degree. Sometimes just getting your foot in the door with a company is enough of a big break for you to start networking and working your way up, even though the starting point may not be your dream job. College won't hurt you, but real-world experience is just as important. A lot of careers in the finance industry (mortgage, stock broking, etc) are considered trades nowadays. I'd recommend finding a job in the field you're interested in as early as possible.
