Would my hijab, or me being Muslim, have a negative impact on my future career in Criminal Justice?

We are living in such difficult times and being persecuted for things we never done nor agree with. However, I am sure it would pass. People are becoming more educated and refusing to give in to fear. For example, London voted for its first muslim mayor. Change is coming but it is going to take time. My advice to you, be like the new mayor of London and write history. It is going to be challenging, but you have at least 4 years before you get into the work force. Four years is a long time and things will change hopefully.

Don't let anyone discourage you from your dream. As a current law professor, I have had countless Muslim students, including students who wear the hijab to class. They have shared with me that they've gotten looks from people on the street, but education is a great equalizer and we need the criminal justice system to reflect all of us if it is going to function properly. It may be helpful to check with the local law school and see if there is a group of Muslim law students that meet together. When you become a trailblazer, it helps to have mentors and support. I recall meeting an African American detective who was on her way to a convention involving other African American detectives. I would encourage you to look at the specific area within criminal justice and see if there are any affinity groups that already exist. Those groups can also be a great source for scholarships.
