Hi, Eveul! I've spent a lot of time among writers though I'm not the best one myself. I did write a one-act play in college and have studied a lot of poetry in my time. (Trust me, you don't want to hear me try to rap.)

You're really asking two questions: first of all, how do you get a scholarship and second of all, how do you pursue a career as a poet and a rapper.

So to answer your first question, the way you get a scholarship is to do really well in school now, and then to find scholarships and apply to them. Your high school guidance counselor can help you find scholarships that fit your interests and your background. For example, there are scholarships for students who want to be professional writers. There may also be scholarships for students who live in your town, or who fit your background (for example, if you have a family member in the military or the police).

As an answer to your second question, the best way to become any kind of writer is to write. If you want to be a poet -- write poetry and even better, submit it to your school literary magazine, or even to magazines or journals in your area. Find out if there are poetry slams going on near you and go to them -- and if the spirit strikes you, compete in them. If you like to rap -- create raps, and find opportunities to perform them. Being able to give examples of your writing and rapping will help you build a resume not only for school, but for a career as well.

I hope this helps-good luck!

Thank you comment icon Adam offered a great response -- espeicially on writing and taking action. that's the first step and the hardest part. In terms of scholarships, here's a blog on fully funded MFA programs for people who want more formal training. Here's the link: https://blog.submittable.com/category/creative/ If you want to be rewarded for your writing, then check out Submittable which has tons of rewards and competitions you can try. Here's the link: https://blog.submittable.com/category/creative/ Duotrope is one of the oldest directories for writing/writer resources based on the style and genre of writing you are involved in: https://duotrope.com/ The #1 action step as Adam shared is definitely try your school's newspaper or literary journal to get started with your career. Good luck! Mozart Guerrier, MSW
