For many jobs, you'll put in a lot of effort, and you may never know if what you did mattered. But in construction, everything you do, whether you are a designer / engineer, or a construction worker, can be seen and felt.

Every day, humanity is changing how the world looks and functions through building bridges, dams, tunnels, buildings, pipelines, ships, airports, etc. All of these have a direct impact on all of our lives and change how we live in our world and you are part of it.

I can give you an example of a construction project I worked on with Engineers without Borders. We built a water cleaning system for a small village in Honduras. A lot of their young children were getting sick and many died each year from contaminated water. We helped make sure all of them had clean drinking water, and there are children who are alive today, and will live to have great lives and kids of their own, because a water system we designed prevented them from getting dangerously ill. We get to be a part of their lives history, even if its a small part and we can share a little in their success, and their descendants successes.

It is also cool because your work stays around, often for many lifetimes. When I look out at the NYC skyline, I can see buildings I helped design, and many of those buildings will probably still be there for my grandkids to see, and their grandkids too. When you build something, you become a part of that thing's history. It's a really cool feeling to have; to know that you are doing something that won't just have an impact now, but will be important for generations.

Sylvia’s Answer

I'm fascinated by the construction field because of the complexity, challenges, various skills required and tangible outcome. A construction job is like a symphony--so many different pieces have to come together to make it work and each player is an important part of the whole. There are so many facets of construction-- planning, funding, material, skilled labor--they are certainly skilled, permits, rules and regulations, weather, readjusting schedules, multiple activities happening simultaneously, status reporting, resource management, vendor management, client management. At the end--you have a finished product that represents all of the painstakingly hard work, commitment, dedication, time, blood, sweat and tears that went into the process. Not for the faint of heart!

For me it would be learning something new everyday. There is always something different that you can be useful in doing on any construction project. l always find fellow workers struggling by themselves with a task. I like to jump in and help. If all people where like that the day would go along easier, but not all keep this kind of work ethic through the day. This kind of work ethic keeps me productive through out an 8hr day., which is another way that makes me like my construction job. I like to produce high quality work and be proud of the job I helped complete. Having the people that paid for the project happy and satisficed with the results. When I step back and stare at the complete job, I see all the blood, sweat and tears and I feel proud of my accomplishment.
I'm sure you will experience this feeling Denisse,
Good luck.

Ryan’s Answer

I worked in the construction supply field and really enjoyed getting to see things being built. When a project comes together it's fascinating seeing all the pieces adding up to one big building or project. There is a real sense of accomplishment seeing things you help build come together.
