Michael’s Answer

The short answer is an enormous amount in most cases. While a few specialties like pathology or radiology do not directly interact with patients, all the rest involve talking with patients, their families, allied health team members like nurses, and physical therapists, not to mention other doctors. There may also be opportunities to teach for some physicians who practice in teaching hospitals or are medical school faculty, there is an opportunity to do community teaching as well. Other physicians are involved in research and work with biologic scientists, and other team members to do research. So there is a lot of social interaction.
