Apply for jobs at your local Humane Societies, and also at some local veterinary hospitals that may need some extra help during the summer months.

What opportunities available to you will depend on your age and your level of education. If you are younger than the legal working age, you will likely need to start someplace as a volunteer. Additionally, many organizations that work with and help animals have a minimum age requirement for you to volunteer. (Working with animals is very rewarding but it also has some hazards too.) If you are younger than the minimum requirement for work or volunteership some organization will still allow you to work or volunteer if your parent/guardian gives permission and often volunteers alongside you.
If you are of working age or old enough to volunteer, places like veterinary practices, shelters and rescue organizations, wildlife rehab stations, zoos and aquaria are great for gaining experience. When I was in college, I volunteered at a small animal practice that was close to my home during my freshman summer, the following summer they hired me as a vet tech assistant. I eventually gained enough experience I could be hired as a vet tech. While I was at school, I volunteer my weekends at the local zoo as a keeper assistant.
Also, be creative. Do you like research? Wildlife? Farm animals? Have you seen or do you know of an organization or professor that you would like to work with? It never hurts to reach out and ask about positions and opportunities they may have available. If you have the time and the finances, think about opportunities in other countries.
