Nirah’s Answer

When you go to vet school to become a veterinarian, you will need to be trained in all common species, which will include companion animals such as dogs and cats, and farm animals such as horses, cows, pigs, and poultry. Once you have graduated, you are free to practice on any species you care to. There are many veterinarians who specialize in just companion animals, or just large animals. Equine vets and cat only vets are also pretty common.

Valesca’s Answer

You will learn about all species but they tend to specialize in groups of animals. In general, a typical vet will choose between small and large animal medicine. Small animal vets tend to work out of an office where their patients come to the office. Large animal vets go where the animals are to a ranch or a farm.

You have numerous responses which provide great insight. Having grown up with horses and small animals, I've had plenty of experiences with veterinarians and specialists.

Similar to human physicians, you'll eventually have the opportunity to choose a specialization. This could involve focusing on large animals, farm animals, horses exclusively, or smaller animals.
Several veterinarians excel in specialized areas such as equine dentistry, chiropractic care, or even small animal specialties like cardiology, surgery, or emergency treatment. As you embark on your journey through veterinary school and start your professional career, remain open to the various possibilities.

Exceptional veterinarians are always sought after!
