Francisco Javier’s Answer

Hi Jairah:
To be an Electrician you need to study Electricity and Magnetism , Electrical Circuits, including the American Standard for electrical installations, I mean, the National Electrical Code. It is important to be knowledgeable about electrical motors (Direct Current, Alternate Current and Universal Motors)- At this point, you can go as further as you wish, this is, not just being an Electrician, but an Electrical Technician who performs not only maintenance to domestic electrical installations, but, if you decide, you can work in the industry by installing devices to control machines or systems, therefore, you will need to learn about Programming Logic Control, to control, not just rotational but linear motors, which are indeed linear actuators. You can acquire knowledge on high-voltage electrical networks, so you can work in your city electrical power distribution or in an electric power plant. Hopefully this is helpful to you. Best Regards, and get tight to your dreams.

Paula’s Answer

To qualify as an electrician, you need an industry-recognised Level 3 qualification, such as:
Level 3 NVQ diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
Level 3 NVQ diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems & Equipment (Buildings, Structure and the Environment)
Level 3 diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) if part of an apprenticeship.
Thank you comment icon Hi Paula, you mentioned the importance of level 3 qualifications. How does one obtain that? Is it through vocational schooling or are there other routes? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Deborah Yayra’s Answer

If you want to obtain a degree to become an electrician, you would have to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). However, apart from obtaining a degree, you can get a certificate from a vocational school to become an electrician or practice as an apprentice under a certified electrician.

Dennis’s Answer

You will need to become a certified electrician to work on your own. As an apprentice, you will work with a master electrician and learn the safety procedures and various methods of installing and testing electrical devices. You need to know how to read a blueprint that shows where new wiring and equipment go. Or where existing wires and equipment are if you are doing trouble-shooting or maintenance.
Certification is by state, so you should get training and certification in the state(s) where you expect to work.
Vocational schools and/or the military offer opportunities to get the basic training you will need.
