Rachael’s Answer

Nursing is such an incredible profession! I was actually a high school social studies teacher for about 10 years prior to becoming a nurse. When I finally made the change, I fell in love with being a nurse because I love caring for others. As a nurse you have a broad range of roles (or jobs) you can pursue. I personally have worked at the bedside in an Urgent Care, Emergency Department and Surgical Outpatient Center. In between those jobs, I dabbled in clinical informatics and administration. Each of my job roles, taught me something new, and now (as a Nurse Practitioner), I am able to utilize all of my experiences when caring for my patients. I personally love being a clinician (someone who takes care of patients on a daily basis). Being an administrator requires you to have great communication and management skills; something you may already be learning in school now by juggling your classes and interacting with your peers and teachers. Which ever route you choose, do what your heart tells you. They both require your passion.

Great answers above! I think the biggest decision is whether you want to be involved in direct patient care as in nursing, or if you are more business minded in which case you would consider administration. Currently, hospital administration involves quite a bit of paperwork, especially when working with insurance companies and government programs. The medical system is dependent on administrators, so it is super important. Personally, I prefer working with patients and enjoy practicing gynecology.

Richard’s Answer

I am an interventional radiologist. There are multiple subspecialties in Radiology, so each of my partners daily work is quite different. I spend about half my time looking at Medical Imaging ( CT, x-ray, ultrasound, and MRI) to diagnose diseases. The other half of my time is spent performing procedures. We use ultrasound, CT, and x-ray to guide various Tools into different parts of the body to diagnose and treat illness. We can open and close arteries and veins as necessary. We also inject radiation and chemotherapy directly into tumors.

I work about 50 hours per week. My hours vary as my group provides 24/7 service. Twice a year I work a week of night shift; and twice a year, I work a week of evening shifts from 4-11 pm. Some radiologists work in outpatient centers and can have more regular hours.

Robert J.’s Answer

Hi Jaycee,

I am an administrator for a group medical practice. I enjoy my job in that I get to support and take of my doctors, nurses and technicians. They are very busy taking care of patients. I believe health care is best when doctors and nurses know an administrator has their back. I manage most supportive programs to meet access to care directives for them. I ensure their pays are correct, and that their personnel records are up to date; and many other aspects of their environment are managed so they can focus on patient care delivery.

Administrators typically have backgrounds in business administration or other management disciplines that involve health systems. Information technology is prominent in health systems as well.

My clinicians are awesome. It is a privilege to serve them.

Best regards,

Rob
