What is your reason/why did you want to pursue a career in the medical field?
I'm a high school junior who is interested in the healthcare field! Going to school to pursue a career in the healthcare field takes a lot of work and dedication and I just want to know how did you get through it and what was your reason for wanting to.

I wanted to work in the medical field to connect with people who needed help. It has been very rewarding and has changed my life for the better. I would recommend volunteering at a hospital or a clinic to confirm if that is where you want to focus your career. I would also recommend to keep an open mind on classes which might be needed for a career in healthcare. I didn't necessarily like chemistry but I ended up becoming a pharmacist. Don't let one or two classes change your goals. Good luck!
Hi Stephanie Baumhover!
I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer my question. With your advice, I have already applied to a local hospital and I will keep in mind of your advice on classes! Thank you!

I wanted to pursue healthcare due to the internal gratification of being a subject matter expert and to be able to help others. It is a very rewarding career regardless of the field you choose (e.g., pharmacist, doctor, dentist, nurse). Pharmacy school was challenging but manageable. My best advice to pursue your dreams and passion. Do what you're interested in and the pathway won't seem daunting. It's a journey whichever path you choose; so enjoy and cherish the path to success.
Hi Palak!
Thank you for your advice and for giving me an insight into what a healthcare career will be like!

Hi Bao-Truc
You have been given some excellent advice and guidance. My only additional thought for you to consider is looking very broadly at healthcare. My career spanned 25+years in healthcare in a business setting. I (like the other mentors) was compelled by the desire to help others. However, I am not (nor should be) a clinical person. So I found an area that I could excel and still fulfill my desire to help others. Best of luck to you!

Hi Bao-Truc,
My father was a physician, and my mother was a nurse. Practicing medicine seemed like a fulfilling occupation for them, and they seemed to really enjoy their jobs. I knew that there would always be great jobs in the medical field, and I wanted to have the freedom to have a job in which I could arrange my schedule to make time for my own kids.
Good luck to you!

I grew up in a medical family and knew from a young age that I wanted to be a physician. When my mother died of colon cancer my first year of medical school, I committed myself to a career in colorectal surgery.

My father and several of my siblings are physicians, so it was always going to be a career I considered. Watching a cardiologist perform a heart cath as an undergrad got me interested in image guided procedures, so I pursued a fellowship in interventional radiology.
