I believe the Facilities Maintenance is one of the most stable careers to get engaged in. There are many specialties that can be sought after along with career mobility that many other careers dont have. Technology is creating both efficiencies and hardships going forward with Facilities Maintenance. Technicians have to be good with the tools of the trade and must consider a computer/smart phone/tablet just as important as a wrench or a drill. There is a huge skills gap coming (its probably already there) to a community near you because there are many older folks leaving the profession, but they didnt train up their replacements. in some cases that is a good thing, but generally speaking succession plans are just as important in facilities maintenance as it is in the board room of any company. Institutional/facilities knowledge is crucial in keeping buildings operating as they are intended to do so.
I agree with that 100%

As each of the other individuals have stated facilities maintenance is a very stable career field. As long as there are buildings and systems (HVAC, Power, Sewer, Water, etc.) there needs to be someone capable of operating, maintaining & repairing them.

COVID and technology converged to create a perfect storm of major change in commercial real estate and, as a result, the facilities industry.
Many extremely large operations are now going 100% work from home. Large call centers, for example (over 250,000 square feet) are closing all across the country because the companies are seeing how effectively the entire operation can work with all employees at home full-time. Citibank, Comcast, Quicken.
These companies have massive real estate holdings that are sitting empty with no intention of reoccupying them.
With a reduced footprint to manage the need for people to handle them is reduced....
The next couple of years will be interesting, to say the least.
