Your university should have a curriculum with a list of classes that you MUST take to achieve an accounting degree. Your advisor will be able to also help you with what is needed in order to become certified as a CPA.

As mentioned, your school will have a list of required classes needed to obtain an accounting degree. There will likely be room for electives, some business related and some not. For the ones that are not business related, choose something that interests you. It is important to be well-rounded. As for the business electives, also choose something that interest you. It may be forensic accounting, international, or IT. Generally, the school will have a list of accepted options.
In NC, you need 150 credit hours to get your CPA certification. While you can sit for the exams before this, it will be required before you apply for certification. Many students I know and went to school with chose to get their Masters degree to achieve this.

If you are taking an accounting degree, you should be getting all the ones that you need within the degree, although you can see if you can take specialized or advanced accounting classes. Once you've taken Accounting I and Accounting II, you'll be well on your way towards understanding accounting.

You can first begin with taking an intro to accounting class - this should be offered in any college that has an accounting program. This class most likely will reach you basic accounting knowledge such as debits, credits, journal entries, etc. after this, you should try to take different accounting classes to decide which sector you would like to eventually go into, such as tax or audit. You will major with a degree in accounting but most likely in your job, you will be performing either audit or tax work, so it is important to choose a preference. Regardless of what you prefer, you should try to grasp as much from both tax and tax and any other courses you take because regardless, at some point, you will need to use all of the knowledge you learn.

Mallorie,
CPA licensing is administered at the state level. Each state has discretion to set requirements for sitting for the exam as well as for receiving the license. I have included the link to North Carolina's requirements in the next steps section.
You certainly should take accounting classes in college. You should also have some exposure to economics, finance, and management strategy.
