How would I build a career in International Affairs?

I am planning on majoring in International Affairs with a minor in Korean and I was wondering if all International Affair jobs are government positions. Would I have to work for the U.S government or could I work for the South Korean government? Does it have to involve government or could it be a research-based job? #government #international-affairs

Theodore’s Answer

International affairs careers can take any number of directions, and you should not consider government service to be the only option (although often it is the first that comes to mind for students, since it is the most familiar). One great option to consider is going into international business. Many multinational businesses either have staff who work on international policy or regulatory issues, or more generally benefit from well-rounded employees who are familiar with geopolitics, international relations, security issues, cultural dynamics, and other issues that are commonly studied in international affairs.

There's a lot you can do with a degree in international affairs outside of the government. Beyond government work, you could also pursue work at an NGO, with an international corporation, or large intergovernmental organization, like the United Nations. Having a minor in Korean, you could also consider working as an interpreter for a foreign government. Being fluent in another language is a really valuable skill if you decide to work for another country's government, or at a corporation or NGO based in a foreign country. I would encourage spending time on the knowledge and skills you'll gain in your chosen field of study, such as foreign language, cross-cultural communication, and understanding of US-Korean diplomatic relations. From there, you can explore even more careers to look into. I hope this was helpful!

Dongseuk’s Answer

It seems like you would like to pursue your career on international affairs focusing on the U.S. Korea relations. There are number of options you could pursue including working at the government (both the U.S. and SK). You may also consider building your career at research center (think tank) or multinational companies operating in both the U.S. and SK.
