Kim’s Answer

Sinay,

Hopefully you are taking alternative education while we deal with the pandemic. And hopefully, if things are not back to normal when it's time for you to graduate, the ceremony will be held at a later time. Perhaps now is the time for you and your classmates to start letting it be known that the ceremony must go on! Try to think of a way to have a virtual ceremony. . . !! That could be interesting, and would definitely be something different! College, if that is your plan, will still go on. Life will in fact get back to normal at some point.

I am sorry we adults are making complete idiots of ourselves by hoarding groceries and TP. This will make you not want to believe what I am about to say. But, in reality, as you go through life, you will be faced with various crises. Very few things will totally derail your plans. Most things you will find a way to work around and still do what you wanted to do. Some of this is due to determination and ingenuity. Each such situation makes you better at handling the next one that comes along.

Stay safe!
Kim
Thank you comment icon YES! DON'T LET THIS PANDEMIC STOP YOU FROM CELEBRATING! You have achieved something amazing, and don't let it go overlooked. Wear that gown if you were planning on walking, plan a special dinner with those you live with. If not, video chat with friends and family. There are still ways to celebrate your successes virtually. Everyone's cheering for you! m lon
Thank you comment icon The positivity in this answer and Mandy's comment put a smile on my face. You still deserve to celebrate your accomplishments! Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Melisa’s Answer

First of all Sinay, Congratulations to you. Celebrate your accomplishments!

As Kim and others already shared, times like these encourage us to become more resilient and creative.

One of my daughters is in her final few weeks of grad school and the college campus has closed and she is not able to finish her clinicals in the hospital. However, she is working with her advisors at school and fellow classmates, talking every day with them as things further develop and finding ways to work with what they can. It is lot of uncertainty to deal with but she is taking it one day at a time. If her graduation is definitely canceled, we will find a virtual way to celebrate too and still take photos of her in her cap, gown and hood, and do something special to recognize her for this milestone.

Best wishes for success in your educational and career goals.

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Find out what other educational alternatives you have available during this time.
Consider creating an online gift registry, i.e., Amazon, Target, etc. so family and friends can celebrate with you and send you a virtual gift.
Here’s a blog post from 2016 with some creative ideas to celebrating graduation https://www.aiuniv.edu/blog/2016/may/graduation-party-ideas
Schedule a short video chat and invite fellow graduates to celebrate with you.

Natasha’s Answer

The answer is linked to the specific protocols being followed by your school district or county. The determination of school requirements for graduation are by being mad at the local level (county, district) with broad guidance from the Department of Education in Florida.

Therefore, please have your parents contact the principal or guidance counselor at your school to understand the specifics for your class.

Jackie’s Answer

Hello Sinay!

As a Senior myself, I understand where you are coming from. The good news is, despite everything that is going on we are still able to graduate with the help of our professors, advisors, and counselors. School's educational classes were switched to virtual lectures and teachings and while this may seem fun for some, it makes life very hard for those who learn better focused in a classroom , especially for difficult classes.

What most professors are doing is using applications such as Zoom or WebEx to do a collect call of all students where either the professor can teach and students can listen and take notes.

Although it may be difficult to keep up with, do keep in mind that keeping organized and staying on track with work is crucial during this time even though I know it may be hard to focus and it may be easy to get distracted.

Talk to your advisor or counselor if you're having doubts about meeting your graduation deadlines!
