What tools can help students focus with so many distractions given the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic?

I’m a grade 11 student at RH King in Scarborough. I love acting and have successfully landed five auditions for leading and supporting roles in short films, theatre and television series. I like learning about business, investments and the economy. I am a diehard Raptors fan and supporter with a love for the game. #business #finance #acting #basketball #raptors #university #entrepreneur

Aspen’s Answer

Personally, I am having a great deal of trouble focusing because I have lost sight of my routine. Allowing yourself to plan time for designated activities and productive endeavors will be so beneficial, especially because most of your coursework continues despite the pandemic. You should schedule your day as if you were still going somewhere else to learn. For example, give yourself a few hours for homework and a few hours for an activity you like, paired with a few hours for an activity that brings you joy. Save time for your personal healing and coping, and take a few extra hours in the day to work on caring for yourself and doing something that makes you feel fulfilled and accomplished. Don't lose sight of your potential, and fulfill your commitments.

Congrats Nathan on your successes!

As someone in the entertainment industry I would highly familiarizing yourself with the trades (Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Deadline). Being able to speak confidently about projects and having a knowledge of the players is really helpful.

Also, take this time to immerse yourself in movies, television, and social content.

I'd highly recommend subscribing to MasterClass where trained professionals give courses on their craft (Shonda Rhimes on TV Writing).

Don't put too much pressure on yourself, be kind to yourself during this hard time.

Best of luck, and we'll come out the other side of this!

Echoing what Aspen said as well - keeping routine is key!

It may help you to create a workspace that is away from where you normally hang out and relax. This will help you get into the headspace of having a work/study like mentality. Don't forget to allow yourself to take breaks. Stand up, stretch, do a few jumping jacks, really anything to get your body moving and engaged so you don't hit a slump.

Try to divvy up time for your interests so you don't feel overwhelmed! Good thing that there are online resources and books available for learning about business.

Congrats on landing your roles and auditions. Educate yourself on what you're interested in, stay engaged, and let yourself relax and unwind!

I agree with Aspen. Keep a calendar and schedule to your typical and normal routine as much as possible. I live by and love using my iPhone calendar to keep me on track. Having calendar reminders keeps tasks and activities top of mind, versus thinking about in general. During these times too, I think it more important now than ever to make sure you break up your day with breaks and physical activity. Keep doing things you love and fit in tasks where you need to. If you are too distracted by social, turn off notifications, delete or log out of the app. Don't let it rule you; you control what you feed your mind. Documentaries are a great way to visually learn too, to break up the types of learning we do. Since you love acting and theatre, perhaps use your social media as a means to keep your followers entertained and amused (if that is your thing). Best of luck and keep doing things you love!
