What would be a good alternative job to have that is in my career field which is singing while trying to get my music career to begin?

When I officially become an adult and get to doing thing on my own I would like to have a job that can help me in the career I want to go in the future but also sustain me financially for things I need to take care of now. #finance #music #singing

The best way to be successful is to figure out what you enjoy doing in addition to singing. There are so many possibilities. You can sing while you're working on your career, depending on your goals, talents and abilities. If you want to be an opera singer, you may be able to support yourself giving lessons while auditioning, after you have finished your school. Pursue a degree in vocal performance at a University with proven alumni; that have gone on to have solid careers. If you enjoy musical theatre, look up NETCs. You can audition and begin being a paid performer now if you are able to book a show. If you want to be a pop/rock singer, study classical technique anyway. Find or form a band and start playing out at school gigs. Read biographies of singers you admire and see how they developed their careers.

Elementary/Jr. High/High School Choir teacher. You will be doing something related to what you want to do, but more importantly you'll be networking with folks that are like you. There will be lots of opportunities. In Dallas many of the teacher sing in the Dallas Symphony Chorus.

Your question is not specific enough. What kind of singing? Pop? Opera? What kind off career do you want? Musical Theater? Regardless, get your Doctorate in music. For singing, make sure you also study an instrument. It help with pitch. Resubmit your question... with more detail. Cheers. AC

Thank you comment icon It is absolutely not necessary to have a degree of any kind to have a career with singing involved. It is helpful. A doctorate is only necessary if you are planning on teaching. I know MANY successful vocalists who have only their BFA, and some who've never attended university. Learning an instrument other than voice is helpful, but absolutely not the only way to improve pitch. Tracy Singer

Angela Theresa’s Answer

Your passion is all important, thus find a "day job" that relates to the music business. You could seek a job working with a music producer or production company.

Of course, I'd recommend you go to college and study music. Then you could make a living 1) teaching private voice lessons or piano, or whatever instrument you play.
