Christine’s Answer

Hello! its a good idea to research the field to determine the requirements and skills needed. Look for someone (or several someones) who is already in that career path to gain insight (a forum like this is a good starting place). The other piece of advice I'd give you is to keep yourself open to possibilities that you may not currently be considering. Many people ender the work force in one area and go on to build successful careers in a different field

Hey Denny,

In addition to educating yourself about the industry that you are interested in - networking is ESSENTIAL. Try to meet others in the industry - whether they are new to the industry or have been in the industry for quite some time. Gain some insight into their experience and see if you can learn any tips or tricks you can apply to your own journey. Be confident and resilient!

Tia’s Answer

Great question!

First I would suggest researching the career field you are interested in and seeing if there are internship, mentor, or networking opportunities available.

With mentor ships and networking opportunities, you can speak to people in the field already and get their advice. Including what headwinds and tailwinds you can expect in that career.

With an internship, you have the opportunity to make sure that the field is the right fit for you so that you know if it is something that you would like to pursue growth in.

Best of luck!

In addition to what others have answered, I would start by choosing a career in a field that you are passionate about. Secondly, always be curious and always be learning (this will flow naturally if you are passionate about your work).

There are so many avenues you can utilitze to aid in your pursuit for growth in any industry. Continue your self developement with learnings related to the field (podcasts, trainings, certifications, education), grow your network both within and outside of the company, get yourself a mentor, and dont limit yourself to your specific title. The other employees are still able to provide great insight and become your advocate.

Since you are just starting your senior year, you have time to explore your options. I would start by shadowing biologists or scientists in careers that you might find interesting. Also, you should take AP Bio and chem in order to better prepare yourself to take these classes in college.
