If you are planning on taking the CPA exam to become a Certified Public Accountant you will need 150 hrs, which is basically a Mater's degree. If you don't want the CPA designation then 120 hrs for an accounting degree or Bachelors.

It depends on what you want to do with the degree. My only thought was the CPA route but knew I wanted to be an auditor for a big firm so knew it meant an accredited university plus knowing the requirements of my state to be licensed. Hope this helps.

Hi Angie! I would say that you would at minimum need a Bachelor's Degree for a job in the accounting profession which would typically take you 4 years. If you wanted to go for your CPA, you could also do that within the 4 years or it may take 5+ years. I got my 150 credit hours to get my CPA within my 4 years at school but I did take some summer and winter courses to do that. I also had 2 minors which filled up my course load to get those extra credit hours, but I also had friends that took a bunch of classes unrelated to business to get their 150 credit hours. The amount of school really depends on what you would like to do but I would say that typically you need 4 years of school.

Agree with the above answer. In some state, you could also achieve 150 hours with a double major - in Accounting & Finance or Accounting and Information Systems, for example. However, the Masters route is more common now and most schools have combined program where you can get you Masters in 5 years. That's what I did and I highly recommend!
