How important is it that I get my degree in what I want my career to be in?
Hi! My name is Anina and I'm a high school senior interning at CareerVillage. I was personally wondering how important it was that your degree was related to the job you are applying for. Do certain jobs not care what major you graduated with? Do certain jobs care a lot? #college #college-major #career-change

Good morning Anina:
From my experience, I would try to get a degree majoring in your line of work and then maybe a minor in something similar. An example would be to try to get a degree in certain area like Finance or Accounting if you wanted to become an accountant or financial advisor with like a minor in business or sales. It is best to get a degree in the line of work you want to work in. My suggestion would be to try to work some internships while you were in college. This will help you to determine if you are going to like what you are majoring in and give you experience to put on your resume. If you are considering two different lines of work, I would try to do these internships early in your college career if possible. If you could do internship one year in line of work your considering say at an accounting firm for example this would help you to determine if you liked it.
If you also were considering a job in advertising, than the following year you could try to work an internship that summer to see if you liked the advertising job better or the accounting job. If they are two totally different lines of work, I would do my best to try to do two different internships early in your college career so that if you like one better than the other you can switch your major. An example would be nursing job versus an accountant. As it would be very hard to land a nursing job after college if you majored in finance and accounting.
My experience is that they do want to see you major in the line of work for the job that you are applying for. My suggestion would be to try to narrow down what you like as early on in your college career as possible and do your best to work two different internships to see which you like first and then major in that field.
Good luck!
