Hi Cheyenne,
There is a great website (O*Net) you can use that shows you which jobs are predicted to have the most job openings. It is based on information from the US Census Bureau and has a TON of useful information. Here is a link to Certified Nurse Midwives. (Also, each job that has a little sun icon next to it means "bright outlook". This means they are anticipating large numbers of job openings for those positions in the near future)

I would suggest taking some time to read through the Bright Outlook jobs, as well as others, and see if you can find some information that is of interest to you. Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck!

Let's dive into the promising world of Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs). This profession is currently in high demand, playing an essential role in women's healthcare throughout various stages of life. From prenatal to postpartum care, and even gynecological services and family planning, CNMs are the go-to professionals. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the job market for CNMs, your chances of landing a job in this field, and the expected growth in job opportunities.
Exploring the Job Market for Certified Nurse Midwives:
An exciting growth in the job market for CNMs is on the horizon. This growth is fueled by an increasing appreciation for midwifery care, which champions a holistic approach to natural childbirth and women's health. The rising number of women seeking healthcare services and an aging population further contribute to the growing demand for CNMs.
CNMs have a wide range of employment opportunities in diverse settings such as hospitals, birthing centers, clinics, private practices, and public health departments. They often work hand-in-hand with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to women.
Your Chances of Landing a Job:
Your chances of securing a job as a CNM are quite promising. The demand for midwifery services is on the rise due to several factors:
1. Healthcare Provider Shortage: There's a global shortage of primary care providers. As CNMs are equipped to provide primary care services to women, their skills are in high demand.
2. Growing Awareness and Preference: More and more women are recognizing the benefits of midwifery care, such as personalized attention, lower intervention rates, and improved birth outcomes. This growing awareness is driving the demand for CNMs.
3. Legislative Support: Recent years have seen an increase in legislation supporting midwifery practice and expanding the scope of practice for CNMs. This has opened up more opportunities for CNMs to practice independently and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
4. Rural and Underserved Areas: CNMs are particularly valuable in rural and underserved areas where access to obstetricians and gynecologists may be limited. These areas often have a higher demand for midwifery services, increasing your chances of finding a job.
However, keep in mind that while the job market for CNMs is generally favorable, individual job prospects can be influenced by factors such as geographic location, experience level, and the overall state of the economy.
Projected Growth of Job Opportunities:
The future looks bright for CNMs, with a strong projected growth in job opportunities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 45% growth in nurse midwife employment from 2019 to 2029, outpacing the average growth for all occupations. This growth can be attributed to several factors:
1. Rising Birth Rates: The overall birth rate is projected to increase in many countries, leading to a higher demand for midwifery services.
2. Expanding Healthcare Services: As healthcare systems evolve, there's an increasing emphasis on comprehensive care and improving maternal and infant health outcomes. This fuels the need for more CNMs in various healthcare settings.
3. Advancements in Midwifery Practice: Midwifery practice continues to evolve with advancements in technology, research, and evidence-based care. This evolution expands the scope of practice for CNMs and creates new job opportunities.
4. Policy Changes: Legislative changes supporting midwifery practice and increasing reimbursement rates for midwifery services also contribute to the growth in job opportunities.
However, these projections may vary depending on the specific region and healthcare system.
In summary, the job market for Certified Nurse Midwives is currently promising, with a growing demand for their services. The chances of finding a job in this field are generally good, considering factors such as the shortage of healthcare providers, increasing awareness and preference for midwifery care, legislative support, and the need for midwifery services in rural and underserved areas. The projected growth of job opportunities for CNMs is also strong, driven by increasing birth rates, expanding healthcare services, advancements in midwifery practice, and policy changes.
