The degree is most useful in the consumer industry.

A lot of companies offer rotation program that allows you to get in a 2 year rotation program and you go through different positions every few months. This way you get taste of different roles within marketing. Based on your performance and preference, you can pick which position you want to continue with.

Even within marketing you can go work for agency who manages multiple client, or work for marketing tech companies that develop technologies used by marketing clients. Or you can work for Marketing brands which use agency and technologies to market their brand.

I know i didn't answer your question exactly but hopefully this background can help narrow your focus and make it easier for you to narrow down potential employers.

Kim’s Answer

Hi Camryn! You have been given some great guidance already. Another thought would be to think about industries where you have a lot of interest or passion. As a marketing professional you have to believe in what you are promoting, so working in an industry and for a company that is reflective of your interests will make it that much more meaningful. Also, I highly suggest that you look at summer internships to experience the "real world" of marketing. If you start doing this early and continue for at least 2-3 years, you will have the opportunity to try a few different areas of marketing to see where you have the most interest. You may also want to consider joining the American Marketing Association (AMA). Your school may have a local chapter that you can join or you can join on your own. This is a great resource for information as well as networking.

Kim recommends the following next steps:

Research different industries starting with key words for areas of interest.
Talk with your college counselor or advisor to learn more about summer internships with businesses.
Consider joining the American Marketing Association either at your college or on your own. https://www.ama.org
