Rachel’s Answer

I am biased because I work at a cancer center, but we have some incredibly talented oncology nurses. They are smart, invested in the care of their patients, and they have hearts of gold. Many patients depend on those nurses just as much, if not more, than they depend on their physicians.

Tequila’s Answer

That is a "depends" sort of question. Nursing is one of the most diversified professions. I enjoy teaching a lot. I've been able to quench that thirst at the bedside, in the classroom, and with students to include actively practicing nurses, college level student nurses, and LVN student nurses. When I wanted to try my hands at non traditional roles, I worked in risk management and patient safety. While attending classes you will be introduced to different specialties, don't forget to speak to the non bedside nurses too, such as case managers, discharge planners, supervisors, and so forth. I also sought positions outside of the hospital, but in clinical roles, still in patient care. Nonetheless, my desire to teach and love of science were all taken care of by being a nurse. The bottom line is that there is no best nursing job but the one you decide you enjoy the most.
Some nurses don't like oncology, it brings up negative emotions. If your perspective about that field is wrought with negative memories than "yeah" you shouldn't be an oncology nurse. But if being fascinated about the science behind oncology gets your brainwaves stimulated, then all means seek more experience in oncology nursing. OK, I did say I like science. Again, whatever you decide is right for you, IS the best. And if you change your mind once you're in a specialty, seeking other types of nursing until you find what you're passionate about, is what makes nursing the best too.

Hello Marie E.,

Any type of nursing is the best Marie!

I think that any response you receive will be highly subjective depending on the specialty of the respondent.

I am an oncology nurse: I take care of cancer patients. My sub-specialty is clinical trials. So I took care of people who receive experimental treatments. I love the science, the research, the patients, the types of doctors, and understanding the molecular biology of the diseases.

So in my mind, taking care of cancer patients is the best type of nursing!

All Nursing are good, it is all depend on your interest, the setting, the environment, and coursework you have completed. I hope you are just beginning your nursing coursework which it will be easier for you to decide which nursing will be better suited you as well as your interest and the coursework you will be completing instead of zooming around not sure or the direction of the kind of nursing you trying to be.

I agree with all the answers because the opportunities are endless! As you go through nursing school, some clinicals will heighten your interest more than others. You can work in such a wide variety of settings, and each setting has their own set of opportunities. That is one of the wonderful perks to a nursing degree, you have options that you never dreamed of!
