Is the career field for computer engineering still growing?

Growing up, I've fallen in love with electronics, including building, modding and programming on computers. I really want to go into designing and building each component from the ground up. What career sub field would this be considered and what the likely hood that I would get a job in it? #engineering #computer-engineering

Matt’s Answer

Joel, the software engineering field continues to grow. We are always struggling to find great new talent. I think someone who tinkers as you have said building from the ground up should consider spending some time thinking about pure software development. It's a much larger field AFAIK. Also with a software background you can work in almost any specialized field.

Thank you comment icon Thank you very much! would you say that the software development field is growing faster than hardware? Joel
Thank you comment icon Absolutely. Software is everywhere. There is always hardware but there is always more software and it continues to grow. Matt Boucher

Christopher’s Answer

Joel,

It surely is. From my vantage, there are times when you want to better "purpose" your tools in your problem solving set. And a good computer engineer can wring the efficacy out of systems before them. So whether you're helping with AI, advanced control systems (i.e. autonomous driving vehicles/drones), blockchain, or the next big bio-medical breakthrough/simulation...you have interest in a field that is burgeoning. Please keep going :)
