What are some different medical specializations (or types of doctors) that involve reproduction, babies, or helping people have children?

I'm very interested in reproduction and helping people have children, but the only career option I'm familiar with is OB/GYN. #doctor #medicine #pre-med #babies #reproductive-health

Hi Kenna,

Thanks for the question. I would encourage you to check out "Reproductive Endocrinologists". These specialists help both men and women with fertility issues.

Obstetrics/gynecology (called OB/Gyn for short) is the specialty. Some obstetricians complete a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship and specialize in complicated pregnancies.

Rama’s Answer

Hello Kenna,

If you're more interested in lab work, you could become an embryologist, working alongside gynecologists in an IVF clinic but primarily focusing on laboratory tasks. Clinical embryologists specialize in reproductive biology, assisting individuals or couples struggling to conceive by performing procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other fertility treatments. Their tasks include genetic testing, embryo grading, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), cryopreservation, and andrology. They work in fertility clinics or hospitals and collaborate with reproductive endocrinologists and gynecologists to provide comprehensive care. In the U.S., East Virginia Medical School and Colorado State offer programs in human clinical embryology. I'm currently studying to become a clinical embryologist at the University of Dundee, so feel free to ask if you have more questions!

Thanhthuy’s Answer

A family doctor or primary care physician can also follow a patient throughout all his/her journeys as well. A PCP can help deliver a patient's baby after helping through with the prenatal process. As a PCP, you can also help taking care of the patient's baby when the baby is born as well. Hope this helps!
