Can I make a living as an actor?

Yes, you most certainly can make a living. It takes a lot of hustling for work -- shows can employ you for as little as 5 weeks paying only a couple of hundred dollars a week. You need to not mind the uncertainty, you need to be flexible, and most importantly, you need to love it.


You can find reports done by the unions on the percentages of their members who work each year. (I haven't worked under Actors Equity Association in 5 years, but maintain my membership. I had to pass on a project because it wouldn't meet AEA standards.) I work sporadically under my SAG-AFTRA card. I could do much more background work and make a decent wage, but that doesn't feel as much like acting.


Making a living relies less on talent and more on tenacity.

Many people do it! I've known several people that are actors for a living. It just takes time and networking. I recommend you take acting classes (if not already doing that) and audition now to start getting used to the process.
