Richard’s Answer

I work about 50 hours per week. My hours vary as my group provides 24/7 service. Twice a year I work a week of night shift; and twice a year, I work a week of evening shifts from 4-11 pm. I also work as an interventional radiologist so am on call about every fourth night for procedures. Getting called in after hours and working the night shift really wreck my sleep schedule

Some radiologists work in outpatient centers and can have more regular hours which could be more convenient .

David’s Answer

To be honest with you, most of the people or friends I have that are working or is a radiologist has really not affect with their lifestyles. They pretty much are able to do what they wanted and spend times with their family and friends, I would say they are not really doing any overtime or over work in their jobs. Most of them have time to go on vacation each year while I am here planning when I can go. As you already know most radiologists are medical doctors that specialize in diagnosing and treating injuries and diseases using medical imaging (radiology) procedures (exams/tests) such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and ultrasound. So I don't see any of the people I know complain or say anything about affecting their lifestyles.

Estelle’s Answer

One way to protect your family life is to join a group of radiologists. When they are off call, they are not responsible for emergencies. As Richard said, call days be busy, but they are scheduled.

Rachel’s Answer

Radiology residency often involves shift work. While the benefits of this are many, (no calls at home, regular schedule, predictability), there are also disadvantages. Night shifts can be difficult and can require long hours away from family. It can be difficult to find a place to rest well during the day and this can lead to irritability and fatigue over time.
