Are all the years it takes to become a doctor worth it?

I'm interested in a career in the medical field. As a physician, do you think all the work it took to get where you are now was worth it?

Rachel’s Answer

4 years college + 4 years med school + 5 years of general surgery residency = 13 years of school after high school

If this is a career that you think would be challenging and fulfilling for life, then absolutely it is worth the sacrifice. I enjoy my job every day and am very glad that I put the time in to pursue this career.

Estelle’s Answer

Absolutely! I have been a gynecologist for about 30 years, and I still enjoy going to work. It requires hard work and dedication, but it is definitely worth the commitment it requires. It is a rewarding career.

Richard’s Answer

Yes! It is absolutely worth it. There are a lot of long hours studying in the library followed by long hours in the hospital, but it is a fulfilling career. There are so many opportunities after medical school... different specialties appeal to different individuals. Or you can follow a nonclinical route in research or even hospital administration.
