Teresa’s Answer

Dear Mariah- I am the nurse manager for a Neonatal ICU and I have hired both new nurse graduates and experienced nurses. I find that nurses who have had some experience in other areas are more comfortable learning to multi-task, prioritize work and have more confidence in asking questions. However, several new graduate nurses have started in my area and have done VERY WELL- I myself worked a year on a pediatric floor and then transferred to the NICU- but I think you can be successful either way- starting out in another area- or beginning in the field you already think you will like. Best of luck to you!
