Panya’s Answer

I currently work in real estate and have worked in this field for over 10 years now. I got into real estate because of my best friend. We met in college in Berkeley, CA. After college, we went separate ways. He went to Yale for his Masters. I stayed in the Bay Area, but didn't get a real job while doing some soul searching. We always kept in touch via cell. One day he called me and said there was a job opening in his team in his company. I followed his suggestion and flied across the country to New York City to see him. I interviewed for the job, but another guy got the job. My best friend was always helping me. At his suggestion, I did some temp jobs for 6 months in NYC. Then his company had another job opening. They offered me that position. And as they say, the rest is history. I would say I got the job and stay in real estate because of my best friend. He has helped me, encouraged me, and advised me for the past 10 years.

Thaiz’s Answer

Hello,
My career was not totally planned. I always loved working with people and also found a better way to make things. I always tried to develop myself to look ahead and prepare to answer to the next question. Due to that, many times I was challenged to assume new resposibilities and new roles.
This was my career path until now, passing through different areas and developing several skills.
I challenge you to start , prepare yourself and accept the responsibilities. This will bring you to a great life! :)

Jennifer’s Answer

Hello Dakota,
First of all it is nice to meet someone from my home state of Maryland. I now live in Michigan. Anyway I had a similar issue in school. I was unsure of what career path to choose so I talked to my school guidance counselor. She recommended I take a few surveys to reveal my interests and abilities. Some of the tests are free. I have provided some links for self assessment but you need to see your guidance counselor, a trusted teacher, or your parents to help you analyze the assessments.
CareerTest.com or the Department of Labor has tons of free assessments and career information at (dol.gov). You can discover occupations you might enjoy and be good at the profession. Try taking the Interest Profiler assessment located at My Next Move . If you've already have an occupation in mind, learn more about it from the occupational profiles, including necessary skills, education, and certification.
I took these very same assessments when I was your age and they really opened my eyes to see the world was full of awesome careers. I am a career consultant assisting clients plan for the future and read their maximum potential.
I wish you the best! Jennifer

Chris’s Answer

Hi,

I think it is difficult (impossible?!) to fully map out your career path and where you want to go at any one point of time. You'll probably find that over time your experiences and circumstances will change what you want to do. I started my career as a business analyst - realised I liked solving problems and implementing change, so moved into project management. I then decided I wanted to experience people management and so took an operations management role, before coming back to larger scale projects. Each role has built on the last and I feel I've got a much more rounded resume as a result. I've moved between companies and roles within companies to fulfill my career goals. My philosophy is to ensure that you're doing something you enjoy and that you're constantly challenging yourself to stretch and experience new things. Good luck!
