Lee’s Answer

An easy and fun way to learn about machinery/equipment/tooling is to watch "How it's Made". I watch the show every so often with some of my engineering friends to see different tools and equipment used to make everyday products. Engineers can have a variety of jobs, some sit behind a computer and make drawings all day while others work closely with operators and run equipment.

Manuel’s Answer

As a software automation engineer, I can say that is awesome to work with the creation and programming of new machines for manufacturing processes. It is educational, you have you keep learning and keep up to date with new technologies, new ways of doing things. It is fascinating, as you are creating new machines instead of just using what is out there. If you are programming, you are giving "life" to hardware, you are making it do what you want it to do. It's satisfying when you see the end product.

The best way to get a peek of what making machines can be is by using LEGO Mindstorms. LEGO Mindstorms allow you to build what you want and program it.
