Would you recommend a career in Colon & Rectal Surgery?

I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #career #career-choice #doctor

Richard’s Answer

Colorectal requires an extra fellowship after general surgery residency. However if you are willing to put in the extra time you will find it to be a fulfilling specialty. Hopefully during medical school, you will get a chance observe some of the procedures they perform.

Rachel’s Answer

This is a fantastic career. You have the opportunity to see sick patients with inflammatory bowel disease and cancer as well as healthy patients who just need a colonoscopy for screening. You work in the hospital, in ambulatory surgery centers, and in clinic. You can take call all the time or almost not at all. One of the great aspects of this career is that you can shape it into the type of job, the patient population, and the lifestyle that you want.

It's a great career. You will have the chance to improve and save many lives. You should try to shadow as many colorectal surgeons as possible. You should be able to do a colorectal rotation in your 3rd or 4th year of med school.

Shawn,
I see you got a few questions regarding Colorectal Surgery, Dermatology and Emergency Medicine. I hope you don't mind me answering a bit for all in here. I am putting some links for you to go over with what is required education and training wise.

One thing I would recommend is what kind of starting salary you would be getting if you invest time and money in one of these fields. I am putting some links to help out. One advice, don't get fancied with mentioned average or median salaries. Those numbers take into considerations all starters to the experienced. I would look at the bottom 20% as more realistic when you start in those field. And oh yeah always remember those mentioned salaries are before taxes. When you decide to take a job or any field for that matter always seek out answers on cost of living in areas where the job is.

Valerie’s Answer

Hello, I am medical student and I have rotated with a colorectal surgeon for a month. The job is very rewarding. I liked that you were able to see patients in the office and also do surgery in the hospital. You perform lots of colonoscopies, and procedures. During office visits, you deal with hemorrhoids and can do in-office procedures, such as rubber-banding. Your personality should be very relaxed, and not awkward as you are dealing with a delicate subject for most patients. It is a long road to get there, but all of the physicians I worked with really loved their job.
