Would you recommend a career in Emergency Medicine?
I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #career #career-choice #doctor

Hi! If you’re interested in emergency medicine there are lots of jobs/volunteer opportunities you can look in to! For example, being an EMT, ER tech, etc! They all work in emergency medicine and can help you get a feel for what it’d be like to make a career out of it. I work as an EMT & I love it! :)

Emergency medicine is actually becoming a much more competitive specialty. Physicians like the idea that they work hard at work and then get to relax at home without the burden of being on call. The compensation is generous compared to some other specialties, and ER docs can often choose the number of shifts they work. That being said, the rate of burn out is high in this specialty.

great answer, Valeria! ER physicians tend to be hospital employees, so they do not need to worry about the daily grind of running a business/ hiring and firing employees/ etc. They also tend to have shift work, so when they are off duty, they are truly off work. This appeals to many providers. On the other hand, they do not get the long term follow up and opportunity to develop long term relationships with their patients. I agree with the idea of shadowing and seeing if the work is interesting to you.
