Would you recommend a career in Neurological Surgery?
I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #career #career-choice #doctor

Neurological surgery is very stressful. This may be overstating the obvious, but I think it is important to remember that neurosurgery involves removing brain tumors, treating patients with closed head injuries, performing surgery on patients with back problems, as such. The difficulty performing the surgeries and potential devastating complications should be considered along with the possible great outcomes for those you help. The best neurosurgeons are able to find balance between work and leisure time to reduce their overall stress levels.

Neurosurgery is a great field that requires 14+ years of school and training after high school. The hours are long and the overnight call is frequent. The patients are sick and often don't have very good outcomes. At the same time, this is a highly rewarding field that requires exceptional technical skill and commitment to patients. If this is your passion, go for it.

The first thing I would recommend you do is to talk to your advisor and the Department of Neurology to see if this would be the right fit for you. You said it yourself that you would like a career where you can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better, so this may be the right career path for you, but I would personally double-check with someone in that field and asks your question there before you make a decision on a speciality
