Would you recommend a career in Medical Genetics and Genomics?
I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #doctor #career #medical

Good question. I think that it depends on what aspect of science and medicine you may enjoy. There are research roles in genetics and genomics - developing the analytical and other tools to understand patients and diseases. Roles in genetic counseling may not require a PhD or MD but can be rewarding and offer time with patients.

This is a very interesting field that you can participate in as a physician or as another type of healthcare provider. Many physicians (such as oncologists) provide genetic counseling to those patients who have a genetic predisposition to the type of cancer that they have developed. Genetic counseling is critical both in the treatment of these ill patients and in determining the screening necessary to protect their family members.
That being said, medical school is not the only way to pursue a career in genetics. Alternative pathways exist, and there may actually be more direct routes to that career if genetic counseling is your passion.
