Would you recommend a career in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation?

I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #career #doctor #career-choice

Richard’s Answer

You would get to help patients in one of the most vulnerable part of their lives, eg after an accident or stroke. This is an opportunity to have a dramatic impact and speed up their recovery.

Shawn,
I agree with Rachel's answer. It would also require patience, as clients may recover very slowly. As a person who has used a lot of physical therapy, I loved all the therapists I worked with, but I noticed they needed to be positive and patient when working with people with various levels of issues. If you can maintain a positive attitude and encourage the patients, you would do well in this area. Also, you need to have a lot of background in treatment options, as everyone has individual needs. Being willing to be inventive and curious, physical therapists can be of so much value to patients.
Best of luck,
Marilyn Lowry

Rachel’s Answer

PM&R is an excellent field where physicians can dramatically improve a patient's quality of life. They can focus on physical therapy, pain management, nutrition, and psychiatric health. This is a great field, but be prepared to work with some patients in relatively poor condition.
