You might want to start by asking local designers about job shadowing rather than interning. Call several designers that have offices close by and ask if you can come in the office on a set schedule that the two of you decide. Set-up times at more than one so that you can see some variety. Let them know that you want to know more about what an interior designer does but don't expect to take too much of their time. Usually our students don't work at an internship until they are in their 3rd or 4th semester of our 5 semester Assoc degree.

I was discussing trouble finding my internship at Physical Therapy and a patient's son's best friend family owned a custom cabinet manufacturing. Salerno Custom Cabinets in Saddle Brook/elmwood park border. PJ welcomed hand drawn renderings based off the floor plans and sample door fronts to help sell the projects. Enjoy the experience but college may not count what you are doing in HS towards your actual internship. I know Berkeley College didn't accept places I had worked prior even though they were placing students there for internships.

Hi Katelin,
Like Ms Atilano mentioned, you should go to your local design firms or offices and see if you can do a mentor/shadow for a week or two. If your school offer career center facility, you can always ask your Faculty to assist you to find out firms/offices for you. Once you get their information, call to the head of the designer and let them know you interested in mentoring.
Another option is you wait until you graduate and look for pre-college interior design summer program. This is a great opportunity to learn interior design.
Adam’s Answer
Hi, Katelin: I agree that Ms. Atilano has some good suggestions about seeking mentorship and job shadowing opportunities in interior design studios. Also, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the professional association for interior designers, and has a Web site specifically for students at https://www.asid.org/students#.VzSuJEZyWc0 -- which may be a very good resource for you. (Professional associations are often a good way to learn about how to get into an industry, both by consulting the resources that are available on their Web sites or even by calling up their staff. Be sure when you do that you have very specific questions and that you only take about 15 or 20 minutes at the most.
Good luck!

If you are a student then there must me some work you have done in your college as project. Gather all your work and add some more work if you want. Do some case studies and do some projects if you find. Do for free if necessary and let other people know you are available for this job
Compile all your work and make a portfolio. Talk about your interests in it and the way you would like to work.
Send the portfolio to interior designing firms and architecture offices. Call them that you have mailed the portfolio.
They are also in need of interns most of the time. They will call you if they like your work. Join them and start working. The stipend may be less and sometimes there is no money at all.
You will learn gradually and may be they will offer you a job or you will get to know more offices.
