Sandhya Mani’s Answer

Hi,

If you are interested in programming start with simple programming language and simple questions so that you can lean step by step and later increase problem complexity.
Try to resolve each error and issue on your own while programming where you will gain more knowledge to resolve any issue.

Hi Jonathan S. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

I offer two suggestions. Start small and practice. I imagine a fair question might be "Well what do I start with?". There may already be advice in CareerVillage on popular or worthwhile programming languages to learn. In the year 2020, your choices can range from JavaScript (which I understand is important for creating web sites) to something deeper like Python (which is used in many areas of data science). In starting out, I also agree that youtube can be a really inexpensive way to at least "learn the lingo", that is to learn the language of programming in a manner that isn't overly technical and can provide easy-to-follow guidance on what a program does, the importance of syntax (the specifics around how a piece of code needs to be structured) and how error messages can be your friend (though sometimes it doesn't feel like it :))

And then...there is practice...practice...practice...practice. There is no substitution for becoming fluent in programming beyond writing programs. As much as you can, as often as you can, depending on your interest and desired level of fluency. Think of it like learning a new spoken language. If someone really wants to speak French, for example, well, they will spend as much time as it takes to learn that language possibly to a level of mastery.

Hope this piece of advice is helpful. Best of luck to you!
