Great question. The very fact that you are thinking about this balance is in itself a great start. Here are some things to consider.
a) Given your first goal to do well in school, you have to find ways to get the study related work done efficiently so that you have time to spare for other activities. If you prep for a class, and immediately follow-up to get concepts fully understood, the material gets absorbed faster and stays longer with you. So, obviously, not missing classes is critical.
b) Most probably you will not be able to do all the 'social' things you would love to do. So, you should be mentally prepared to pick what is most important for you and be contended to give up on the rest.
c) Like minded friends, who are looking for similar balance between studies and social life, will be a great asset.
d) Understand that you will not get this balance right on day one! Don't beat up yourself. Keep reminding yourself of your goal and you will soon the right balance.
Good luck.

I recommend developing a schedule that gives you enough time to study throughout the week. Plan ahead and make sure that you give yourself enough time to ensure you get all of your school work done first. Another important thing to remember is that it may be unrealistic to think you can participate in all of the social events you are interested in. Going to and doing well in school will often times require sacrifice. So prioritize those events that interest you the most, but also keep in mind that your school work should come first. You should never push your school work aside or try to take care of it at the last minute because you feel like "socializing".
