Nicole’s Answer

Hi Aleena M.

Another option on getting starting in this field could include doing a bit of research about what part(s) of data science you may want to work in, start on or move into. Like many IT (information technology) roles and jobs, there are many levels for job tasks where there are opportunities to get in. One very helpful skill to gain includes programming (JAVA, Python come to mind).

I agree that having a built in curiosity about how and why things happen is a great foundation for a data scientist role.

Volunteering to work at colleges/universities, possibly in their science or math departments, could be a good start.

Good Luck!

Steve’s Answer

Your best bet is to take as many classes as you can in high school that will support this major. Computer Science, math, programming, and related courses would all be very useful. If you have access to the resources, try experimenting with databases and/or database applications. Search the internet for information about data science and the careers it leads to. And most importantly, do your homework and research which colleges and universities have the best programs in this specific area. One great choice is the University of California, Irvine. You can check them out at:

Good luck!

Valerie’s Answer

The type of traits to be a good data scientist are curious, organized, and persistent. If this sounds like something you want to do, the first step is earning your bachelor's degree (going to college),. You will want to major in IT, computer science, math, physics, or something related to data science. Most people will then go to graduate school to earn their master's in their related data science field. After this, you can apply for jobs as a data scientist. Right now, you can try to learn as much as you can from others. For example, try to shadow or work at a local college/community college IT desk. There are lots of programs and internships for high school students that you can look into for data science as well. Here is an example https://www.glassdoor.com/job-listing/summer-internship-advisory-services-ihs-markit-JV_IC1134732_KO0,35_KE36,46.htm?jl=3460688030&utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic
best of luck!

Sandesh’s Answer

Start with youtube videos and then udemy and coursera. Do basic search in youtube on what is data science? Also read about business analytics, data analytics. Data Science is a broad discipline of using data to find answers, insights which ultimately drives decisions. The act of applying data science to find these answer is data analytics. So knowing just about Data Science may not be enough unless you get in to practicalities of applying it to solve problems for the organization.
