Hi Paige! To become a pediatrician, there are many steps you will have to take. First, you will need to go to a regular, 4-year college and get a bachelors/master's degree. Your major can be anything, but most pre-med students choose a science major (biology, chemistry, etc.) So, that will take you at least 4 years. You will also need to get involved in the medical field during this time, shadowing doctors, volunteering, and working in some way. Following your undergraduate degree, you will take the MCAT and apply to medical school. Most people describe this process as taking 18 months. You can start while you are still in undergrad. So, for example, if you start undergrad in August 2020, you could start Medical school in July 2024 at the VERY earliest, but this type of speed is very rare. Most people would probably start in 2025. Medical school is another 4-year program. After you graduate from medical school, you have to go into a residency. This is where you work as a "resident physician" and learn what it is really like to be a doctor. Residencies last anywhere from 3-7 years. After your residency, if you pass a certification exam, you will finally be a doctor!
So, in total, that is 4 (undergrad) + 1 (applying) + 4 (med school) + 3-7 (residency) = 12-16 years of schooling to become a doctor!
I hope this helps!

In the US, to apply to medical school, you need a bachelor's degree. Any 4-year university should suffice.

Pick a college that suits your personality and a major that interests you. You will need to get good grades in college in order to apply for medical school. At the medical school I attended, the average GPA is reported to be 3.85, so even one or two B's can hurt your chances of acceptance.

Aside from this, any major is acceptable as long as you complete the prerequisite courses.

Typical medical school prerequisites include:
Biology: Lecture – 4 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
General Chemistry: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Organic Chemistry: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Biochemistry: Lecture – 1 semester
General Physics: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Math: Statistics – 1 semester
English: Rhetoric (Composition) and Literature – 2 semesters

During college study for and complete the MCAT. Apply to medical schools during your last year of college.

Medical school takes 4 years to complete.

After medical school pediatricians complete a 3-year residency for additional training.
