Are employers hiring right now?

I am graduating soon and I want to know how likely it is that I will find a job post-grad. I’m looking for a career in publishing, specifically as an editor for fiction books in the young adult genres. #career #editing #writing #publishing #YA

Hi Lyzzie. Yes, a number of companies are still hiring even if we have a pandemic. My recommendation is for you to create a LinkedIn account so you can check your options there.

While most companies are in the work from home situation now, there are sill a handful who kept their hiring/recruitment open for those seeking jobs. Update your resume and make sure that you highlight your achievements.

There are a lot of online jobs, feel free to choose what will make you happy and engaged.

Good luck!

Hi Lyzzie,

While times are tough, right now there are jobs out there. If you can keep an open mind and understand that your first job won't be your dream job, you will be able to build a career for yourself. Another opportunity is to find ways to volunteer that would connect to your career goals. I am currently working with a non-for-profit to create a social media marketing campaign. This relates back to my passions and helps to make me a more well-rounded fashion buyer which will certainly help my career!

Best of luck!

Dexter’s Answer

Hi Lyzzie,

No one knows how long this stay-at-home situation will continue and no one really knows how that'll impact business' revenue, and as a consequence, their ability to hire. Having said that though, certain businesses are thriving. Business such as Amazon, Zoom, Netflix, etc are doing better than they have ever done.

Just looking at the increased library wait times, it feels like the publishing industry will do just fine, even though less people are shopping at book stores. Though, if you want to make sure you have career choices when you graduate, you may want to broaden the types of jobs that you're considering. For example, the video game industry is showing crazy growth numbers and I'm sure there will be many jobs in the video game industry, including editors. :)

I wish you the best of luck!

Regina’s Answer

Yes, they are several companies still hiring. A lot of these companies offer remote or virtual positions. I would suggest like the others who have submitted a response before me to set up a Linked in account. Also search freelance editor or writing jobs. There are several businesses who need people with your skill set. There are opportunities out there for this field. More people are writing, because they have more time. They are birthing those books they always dreamed of writing, but didn't have the time or the motivation to do it. Stay motivated and keep searching. You will find what you are looking for.

Even through all the uncertainty, companies are looking to position themselves for when things ease up. So, Yes, some companies are still hiring-- or actively recruiting. I would suggest creating a LinkedIn account. You can structure your profile to look like a resume and also make your profile active for recruiters. Also there are a number of recruiters you can find on there and reach out to directly-- if they have your info they can pair you up with a current job match-- or they will most likely have insider info with companies to have a better idea of when they will be hiring again.

I would suggest signing up for Linkden and begin creating your networking circle. You should be able to browse different companies and positions available. Another site I would suggest is Glassdoor. Good luck on your search.

Manoj’s Answer

Based on recent discussions with my friends and collogues in industry, some the companies have declared hiring freeze while some companies are continue hiring. I know people are still getting interview calls in this COVID 19 time. So if certain roles are critical for the organization they would still continue hiring. So I would encourage to apply for open job positions. Best luck.

Becky’s Answer

There are so many companies that are hiring right now. Look for companies that have weathered this storm by changing their business model and making new ways to work for their employees. Some companies have shifted to work from home and hybrid positions to keep people safe and still working. Lots of companies are going to thrive after this. Some, however, won't. Especially businesses that were slow to respond. After this is over, we will be able to assess this better. But just know that the future is still very bright!

Yes, companies are currently hiring with COVID 19. I know the company I work for is hiring. Do you research in finding the job that is best suited for you. Also, a lot of companies offer internships for recent college graduates. Best of luck!
