Three to four years.
Bob’s Answer
There are certificate programs, 2 year programs, and even four year art programs with a focus in photography. Which program you choose depends upon with whom you wish to work. Major companies may prefer a college degree with even experience in graphic design in addition to photography. Free lance (working for yourself) of course does not require any college. If you goal is job security, you may want to broaden you field of expertise to areas such as graphic design in addition to photography.
David’s Answer
The simple answer; 4 years of college. I answer lots of general questions regarding photography as a profession. Photography can be a rewarding career, but it is also a difficult career to earn a great deal of money. If you want to be a photographer to earn lots of money, I would recommend another field. Yes, there are photographers who make lots of money, but they are few and far between. If your passion is to create great photographs and express your creativity with a camera, then this could be a good career choice for you. But, aside from understanding how to use a camera, you have to have persistence and determination. Generally, it takes quite a while to get established and develop a steady clientele. And, you never stop learning about your craft. I recommend to young people they get a degree, teach what they love and pursue their passion. That way you can earn an income and pursue your dream.

The real answer is forever, and you will love it. There is no end to learning in photography, and if you love photography, you will look forward to the never ending enjoyment of progression. As far a "formal school" I attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, IA for two years. They have changed the name of the school, but it is still located there and several VERY successful photographers such as Woody Walters and myself graduated from there. I also attended many seminars which advanced my formal education. Real life is the biggest and best teacher in all subjects of life. It is a very rewarding profession, but REQUIRES total dedication and persistence - make sure you can commit and then go for it - you will be wealthy from the life choice.
