I'm not sure what grade you are in, but assuming you are beginning college, your internships will most likely be set up through the school. I had a lot of friends in college who were pursuing education and during their first two years, each education class that they took would require them to contact a school and volunteer in an assigned classroom for a specific amount of hours to pass the class. Then, junior year each semester they were assigned to an internship classroom where they would assist in the class once a week. Once they got to senior year, the internship classroom was still assigned to them but the first semester they were working there 2 days of the week and the second semester they were interning in this classroom 5 days a week and not taking any college courses alongside.

You will be required to do a pre-practicum and a practicum, depending on the laws of the state where you are earning your degree.

You can also try to teach summer school at a local district or work in an academically-oriented summer camp.

If you are going for your teacher certification at a college you will be student teaching, so you don't need an internship. By the time you get hired you will have the necessary experience. Still you can gain experience by volunteering or as a paid employee teaching or assisting at recreational programs, after school programs, or small private educational programs. You can do private tutoring, like reading enriched or math or art. Most teachers are born to teach. You either love it or you hate it.

That is such a great question! Though you will have several opportunities to get hands on experience in college courses as well as student teaching, I highly encourage you to find a part-time job at a summer camp, community center with a childcare area, or any local churches, synagogues, or fitness centers with child-care. Having experience in these types of fields will only increase your creativity and provide you so many opportunities with an in-depth experience of teaching. You will also get practice speaking to parents and getting familiar with the community, which will only increase your chances of employment within the local school districts.

Thank you comment icon Hey Leslie, I completely understand what you mean. Our company is definitely planning to hire several new team members if we are able to open this summer. I would encourage you to visit the website of the places you're interested in and email the General Manager or Director, whoever is the highest ranked in the business. They are most likely still working. I would also look at their website and if they have job openings, apply for them. Carson McGill
