Is getting a major in psychology and a minor in economics a good choice if i want to work in marketing? if not what is another good minor to pair with it

I was going for the marketing major but I was one point away from the required gpa to continue it so I dont want to waste anymore time. I heard you don't really need a marketing major to work in marketing? #college #psychology #marketing #economics #internship

Yes-the psychology major and marketing minor are a great combo. IF the curriculum at your school is flexible enough for a second minor, I would suggest learning a second language and then complete a study abroad semester in the country whose language you've learned in the classroom. In that way, you will increase your spoken fluency and will be better versed in that nation's culture. Doing what I've recommended with the second language will boost your employment prospects (and perhaps allow you to find new friends!).

Best of luck with your studies and eventual career!

It doesn't really matter degree you graduate with if you want to get into marketing. I would advise that you minor in communications as that translates well into the field of marketing. If psychology is your major, it would help if you study the buying patterns and emotion connections associated with customer buying cycles.

I am a seasoned marketer that started off interested in Information Technology but my passion led to me the marketing field. It can be done, you can take a few marketing courses as your electives so you can get exposure to the marketing theories.

Pick a path and pursue your dreams.

Stephen’s Answer

I took a Psychology course when I was pursuing my Marketing Degree because I wanted to understand the decision making process. Part of working in Marketing is understanding human behavior and what influences a decision. That is important in order to determine who your specific target markets are for a product or service. An understanding of economics is a must since that impacts purchasing power. Numerous markets can be impacted by slight shifts in an economy impacting many products and services. (For example: one signal of a potential downturn in the economy is a decline in the purchase of men's underwear!) Good luck!
