Is it better to stay in area, or go to a university somewhere new?

I want to go to universities in other states, but my family and a few of my teachers promote staying in my current state. #out-of-state-student

Hi Morgan!
As I tell my students, apply to a minimum of 4 colleges, preferably more. Every person has a different goal/life situation. You have go for what you want! Shoot for the stars, but always have a Plan B (and a Plan C). Life is ever changing, and if you decide to go to College our if state, and are unhappy, you can always apply elsewhere and transfer. If possible, visit the colleges prior to committing. You must be happy with your living environment if you are to have a successful college experience. You've got this!

Hi Morgan!

Where you choose to go to college is 100% preference. You have to do what's best for you personally and financially. Research colleges that you're interested in and find the one that will best help you reach your goals.

I chose to attend a university in my hometown. But not because it was close to home. I researched schools that offered the program I was interested in, visited the campuses, sat in on real college classes and spoke with professors.

College is also a large financial burden for many people. Often in-state tuition is the more affordable option for families. This may be a reason that your parents are encouraging you to stay in state.

Meet you with you guidance counselor and talk about your options. If there's a school on the east coast that you're really interested in, it certainly doesn't hurt to apply and weigh your options.
