The best way to get ready to be a social worker is to volunteer or work in the field. Social work is very broad and you will find your niche by gaining experience. Through your experience you will be able to see what you like and don't like.

The best way to get ready to be a social worker is true, real, life experience. People in general distrust outsiders coming in trying to tell them how to live their lives when they have not "walked a mile in their shoes." I am not advocating that you go become a single mom or a dope addict. However, it is hard to have credibility with people when you can't truly relate to them.

As an example: when I am teaching classes to unemployed people, most of them give me "that look." But then I break the ice. Sometimes I use the story about how my first job interview (after 25 years at my previous job) started with me arguing with the lady who was doing the interview, before the interview even started. It is "shared experience" that allows us to connect with, and trust, other people.

In as much as I don't want you living this summer under a bridge, I offer this simple advice: Seek first to understand. Not everybody has the same values. Not everybody wants. or needs, to be helped. There are sub-cultures within our culture. Treat all with respect and compassion. Social work can be rewarding. I wish you well!
