I will most likely have to take out student loans. Is it hard to get approved without credit or much work history?

I will need extra funds for housing. The college I plan on going to does not have dorms. #housing #student-housing

Stephanie’s Answer

Hi Shane,
The answer is no, it is not hard to get student loans and they are, generally, not based on credit history or work history. You and your parents will need to complete the FASFA to qualify for grants or loans. I would encourage you to work with the Financial Aid office at your college to determine the best resource of funds specific to your situation. But approach loans carefully and with a plan to repay them. Best of luck to you as you approach this important milestone!

Stacie’s Answer

I agree with Stephanie's answer, it is not difficult to get approved and obtain student loans. However, be cautious with them and take the time to understand fully. Most people starting college are unaware that there are options and you are in control - you do NOT have to max out the amount you're approved for. While applying for loans, be sure you are maximizing all scholarships and grant opportunities first to minimize the amount you need to rely on loan funds. It is time consuming to apply for scholarships and grants but it is absolutely worth it to cut down on the loan repayment you'll have in the end. Get with your high school and/or college student advisor to find out about various options for financial aid that aren't loans.
