I would say that happiness is a State of Mind, "Happiness comes from choosing to be happy with whatever you do."
Ultimately, being happy with what you have is a matter of focusing on the good things in your life, while it's impossible to control everything that happens to you, you can control your internal thought processes by the actions you take. My suggestion is to let go of unrealistic burdens and expectations and think about all the great moments and do your best to make yourself feel good in the here and now. Each milestone you surpass on the way to your goal, feel great when you accomplish it and savor the happiness.
Kevin it looks likes you've got a good handle on what brings you longer-term happiness, take a moment to think about your gifts you already have that make you happiest.

Are you asking as a political theorist? A philosopher? A Priest/Rabbi/Buddhist? A neurobiologist? Are you asking as an individual or thinking of humanity in general?
You have just asked an ancient question and best and most brilliant minds have been debating for millenia.
There are wonderful texts out there. (I don't think my personal opinion on what constitutes happiness for me would be of benefit to you, unless you agree that happiness=dogs).

It is a comforting emotion. It is one of many feelings and states that we all experience based on our perception of life. That is why the feeling is so individualized. Different elements in life will cause you to be happy at different times in your life. I believe that on some spiritual level, happiness connects you with the wonderful things in life and it is up to you to define "wonderful" .
There is a song from a Broadway musical which asks the same question. I would like for you to listen to this tune and see what you think . Thanks for asking such a powerful and important question and may your personal discovery be an exciting one !
