Alwyn’s Answer

Luke,

It depends on what the company does and its products and services. Companies are founded every day all over the world in one room offices, shared work spaces (communal working environments), bedrooms and still today garages. If you develop software you need very little room but if you build airplanes then there’s a different need for space. A lot of today’s tech startup rent space in a shared working space only needing a desk, electricity, WiFi or other internet access and the laptop they bring.

Hope this is helpful.

Kevin’s Answer

None. Many indie game companies are built in the apartment of its founder(s). There is no reason to rent out office space without some serious traction or funding. That being said, it can be helpful to work in shared work spaces with other like minded entrepreneurs.

Ace’s Answer

Starting up a company does not take a lot of space. You can just start it from your room in your house. Look at Apple, they started in a garage building PC.

Also, make sure you keep your running cost low (cost that you have to spend regardless of revenue). This will allow your company save capital. If you rent a space to start a company, this will be a running cost and you will need to pay this rent regardless of your revenue.
